Lego Toy Box
My wife and I decided that our son, needed a special toy box to house his MANY Lego's. So we had a brilliant idea, why not have the Lego's in a Lego. We wanted this to be mobile, so his masterpieces could move with him as often as he wanted. We are lucky to have a friend, that is a gifted drafter, draft up some very specific plans for the box. And so with the plans in hand, we went straight to the local lumber store and started picking up materials. However unfortunately, even the best made plans can go awry, and I was unable to help, but the same drafter is also a very skilled craftsman, and to our surprise completed the project for us, prior to Christmas. Below are some photos and a set of plans for the completed project. The project below is made out of 3/4" A/B side plywood. A/B plywood has a finished edge and face on one side, which keeps rough edges and splinters to a minimum.
Here are the plans that he drafted up for us.
Here is the finished project looking from the front.
Here is the lid, with attached Building plates. We used 2 10"x10" Lego Duplo plates, for the larger Duplo blocks. You may also use the standard size Lego plates as well. This will allow the box to grow with the child, by allowing them to use both the Duplo and standard Lego's. They are glued on with a strong wood glue, and clamped until dry.
We used standard furniture casters for the box wheels. The original idea was to use the locking wheels, however due to the height of the box, unlocking the wheels would have been difficult.
Here is the finished product with one of his masterpieces.
**NOTE**
Parents may need to assist smaller children with removing the lid and rotating it, as the lid is moderately heavy. This lid stands up to a 4yr old and a 17 month old.
